Curated the BLK HKISS Exhibit

I curated and installed a small art exhibit at my school with a peer and the support of some of the art faculty.

In parallel with the information about the Harlem Renaissance that the Hotchkiss Black Student Union has been sharing with the Hotchkiss community, BLK HKISS provides a snapshot of the meaningful artwork that black identifying artists have created through their time here. Though not an exhaustive collection by any means, this group of work communicates a narrative more about the black experience here at Hotchkiss; what's on the minds of our black artists, what’s important to them, and who they are. With subject matter ranging from heritage, empowerment, Hip Hop, to iconic historical figures, the work provides our community with a window into some facet of their beautiful brilliant blackness.

I’ve been making art for a long time and have been fortunate enough to have my work included in some exhibitions and shows, but have never had any real experience in the curatorial process. From generating interest and getting artists to submit work, creating a concept and unifying theme for the exhibit, planning the layout of all the work on the wall, to getting to installing and then having to rework the entire plan, It’s been fun trying to figure everything out as I went through it all. learning that curators are not simply putting random work onto a wall in a way that looks good, but rather creating a piece in of in itself with pieces from work thats not their own has been incredibly interesting. I hope to be involved with more exhibition projects in the future celebrating my fellow black artists.
